Spain Emerges as Initial Among The Contest’s Major Five to Threaten Boycott Should Israel Take Part
Spain has announced it will pull out in the next Eurovision Song Contest if the Israeli delegation is allowed to take part.
Governing Body Vote Results in Formal Statement
Representatives of Spain’s public media decided with a majority in support of a non-participation if the nation of Israel field an entry in the 2026 edition.
This makes Spain the initial member of the often referred to as “major five” – along with France, Germany, the Italians, and the United Kingdom – to make this move in protest to the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip.
UN Findings and International Situation
The decision came on the same day a UN commission determined that Israeli forces was committing systematic destruction in Gaza.
Additional broadcasters – including Slovenian, Irish, and the Dutch – had previously stated parallel intentions regarding the contest.
The Broadcaster’s Statement and Board Voting
Earlier this year, we petitioned the European Broadcasting Union for a in-depth debate concerning Israel’s participation,” said RTVE in a release. “Other members backed our request.”
The motion to not participate garnered 10 yes votes, four oppositions, and one abstention.
The organization emphasized that the boycott does not impact the national selection event, which it described as a self-sufficient competition with its distinct profile.
Eurovision Background and Past Examples
Upcoming Eurovision is set to occur in the Austrian capital in spring. It is one of the planet’s most-watched TV spectacles, drawing in excess of 160 million watchers.
Russia was prohibited from participating following its military incursion of Ukrainian territory in recent years, while the Israeli entry has remained to compete despite growing international criticism.
Organizing Body Response and Deadline Adjustments
The EBU began a discussion mechanism in the summer with the 37 member organizations from the last edition.
Typically, broadcasters must notify participation by October, but this year the deadline was pushed back until the end of the year, permitting delayed choices to opt out.
Yet, several networks that start their song choice shows in the autumn are under expectations to determine sooner.
Global Positions
Slovenia was the earliest to state its boycott, subsequently joined by Ireland and the Avrotros.
The Dutch network mentioned apprehensions over journalistic safety and the significant number of media fatalities in the conflict zone.
Iceland noted it was still reviewing its position and reserved the right to pull out.
Multiple Scandinavian nations have already their selection processes but are at the same time considering the chance of a last-minute withdrawal.
Mixed Perspectives and EBU Position
The contest’s director remarked: “Acknowledge the strong views regarding the conflict. The EBU is engaging with all participants to collect viewpoints on the way to address geopolitical disputes… Ultimately, up to every country to choose if they wish to participate.”
On the other hand, The Israeli media outlet has stated its plan to compete in the 2026 competition.
