The Vice-President Endorses Mass Online Harassment Campaign Against Charlie Kirk Detractors
On Monday evening, an extensive effort to publicly identify, threaten, and target people viewed as celebrating the death of conservative activist the political figure was endorsed by JD Vance.
While guest-hosting on the late commentator’s show, the Vice-President stated that those who witness anyone applauding Charlie’s assassination” should “call them out”. He further added: “Hell, call their employer. We do not believe in violent tactics, but we strongly support in civility, and there is no civility in the applause of political assassination.”
In the past week, numerous employees across diverse industries—ranging from university faculty to an commercial aviator—were terminated due to their comments about Kirk’s death.
An anonymous online platform that began gathering reports of anti-Kirk rhetoric stated it had received over sixty-three thousand reports. Originally named “Reveal Kirk’s Critics”, the site rebranded on Monday to the “Charlie Kirk Data Foundation”.
Supporters of former President Trump have sought to connect Kirk’s killing—without evidence—to what they label as a organized leftwing “terror” network that endorses political violence. This has sparked concerns of a draconian crackdown on free speech.
On the show, the Vice-President announced that the administration would “work to dismantle the institutions that encourage violence and extremism in our nation”.
Accompanying Vance on the podcast was Stephen Miller, who pledged to crack down on what he called a “vast domestic terrorist operation” he blamed for the killing.
“With God as my witness,” Miller stated, “we are going to use all available tools at the Department of Justice, DHS, and across this government to locate, disrupt, dismantle, and destroy these networks.”
Ideological affiliations of the shooter remain unclear, and the United States has experienced a surge of violence in the past few years that has affected both Democrats and conservatives.
Nevertheless, the dragnet has also ensnared those who voiced disapproval of the deceased activist, a Christian nationalist with a history of sexist and bigoted speeches. A number have simply repeated the commentator’s statements or been accused for failing to grieve his death.
One individual affected was Army Lt Col a service member, who shared Kirk on the date of his killing. This included his labeling the landmark legislation as a “beast” that “has now turned into an discriminatory tool”, and his assertion that certain firearm fatalities are the cost of the right to bear arms.
Republican-controlled governments such as the Sunshine State, the Sooner State, and the Lone Star State have launched inquiries into teachers accused of making inappropriate statements following last week’s assassination. Meanwhile, the US military has encouraged members of the public to report those who “celebrate or mock” the death, and stated that several service members have already been removed for their statements.
Appeals for a strong response by Vance and other Trump allies have brought back memories of some of the most troubling chapters in American the past.
“Official participation in this does inch it nearer to resembling the Red Scare,” said a free speech advocate of the free speech organization, evoking the 1950s campaign to eliminate communists that led to false allegations and ruined careers. “That was hardly a proud moment for open discourse.”
Democrats have also been targets of political violence in recent times, such as the summer killing of a Minnesota state lawmaker and her spouse, and the assault of former House speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband in their California residence.
