UK Premier Orders Investigation into Security Service over Misleading Information

The Premier has ordered a renewed investigation into how the Security Service presented misleading information to three regarding conversations with a broadcaster.

The Prime Minister's instruction comes after demands from the superior court and oversight body, which both rejected MI5's accounts about what happened.

Case Focuses on Neo-Nazi Agent

The case centers on a neo-Nazi undercover operative codenamed Agent X who abused his MI5 role to threaten his companion, whom he attacked with a large knife.

Earlier this week, the Prime Minister instructed the oversight official the commissioner directing him to undertake a new inquiry.

"I have officially commissioned a mandate to the Commissioner to commence this inquiry immediately."

The Prime Minister said that the tribunals "plan to employ the results of this probe to decide their future proceedings in regarding the case of Agent X."

The Prime Minister noted that the oversight bodies had determined that MI5's internal reviews into the false evidence "exhibited serious procedural deficiencies."

Revelations and Regret

In February, a media outlet revealed that the intelligence agency had lied multiple judicial bodies while justifying its treatment of the misogynistic intelligence operative, whom the organization had investigated in a 2022 investigation.

Advocating non-disclosure, the Security Service told judicial authorities it had followed its protocol of not acknowledging or refuting sources' information.

However, the service had disclosed the informant's status in telephone conversations with a reporter, as it tried to persuade them not to look into the informant. The organization strongly defended its position until evidence showing it was incorrect was presented, including a documented call of one of the exchanges.

Subsequent to these exposés, MI5's Director General apologised. Two official inquiries then were conducted which absolved MI5 and its staff of deliberate wrongdoing, asserting the false evidence was because of oversights and poor memories.

Judicial Bodies Dismiss Explanations

But, in July, a group of senior high court judges determined that the "inquiries carried out by MI5 to date suffer from major operational shortcomings" and that "we cannot rely on their conclusions."

The judges said it would be "too early" to determine whether to initiate contempt of court proceedings against any MI5 officers before a new investigation occurred.

Subsequently the period, the investigatory powers tribunal also rejected MI5's explanations and requested a comprehensive probe.

Fresh Probe Commissioned

The renewed probe will be conducted under the authority of the official, who has oversight of MI5's intelligence gathering. His office was also given misleading testimony by the service in the situation.

A source stated: "We are concerned that inaccurate evidence was presented to the tribunal and legal panel. The Director General of MI5 has justifiably expressed regret for this serious failing, both openly and to the tribunals."

"Each tribunal concluded that more review was required to establish how inaccurate information ended up being provided to them. The administration accepted their recommendations and the PM has commissioned the Commissioner – the oversight head – to oversee this probe. It would be unwise to comment more until it is finished."
